What you need to know before you eat out on the keto diet:

1. Do your research

Here’s the first of your keto diet hacks for eating out. I bet before you started on the keto diet you just took for granted the type of food you’d be offered by restaurants.

But now you’re sticking to a low carb lifestyle you’ll have to be more aware of what choices are available to you.

So, before you even leave the house, give yourself a head start by reviewing the restaurant or cafes’ menu online.

Above all, make a mental note of which dishes are healthy and avoid making an uninformed, unhealthy, and impulsive decision.

2. Absolutely NO bread basket

To avoid the temptation of munching your way through 2-3 slices of high carb bread while waiting on your order, ask the server NOT to bring any bread to the table.

3. Choose low carb sides

Sometimes you have to request an alternative. For example, if your entrée dish is full of high carb side choices such as fries, rice or pasta, ask politely for a substitute.

Most restaurants will be happy to accommodate you with a low carb alternative like broccoli, asparagus or a salad.

After all, they want you to have an enjoyable meal

4. Beware of pizza (keto diet hack)

Who doesn’t love pizza? But just because you’re on the keto diet doesn’t mean you have to get up pizza for good.

Most of the carbs are in the crust of a pizza, not the sauce and toppings. So, dive into the middle of your pizza and avoid the high carb pizza crust.

5. Control your temptation

Not easy to do. But before you head out try snacking on a healthy ketogenic alternative.

This will curb your appetite to help you avoid choosing unhealthy choices.

You don’t want to ruin your appetite completely, as you’ll want to enjoy your meal.

But, a few nuts or avocado slices will certainly take the edge off your appetite and avoid overeating.

6. Don’t desert your dessert

While you’re on the keto diet you may find it hard to control those sweet food cravings.

But, you don’t have to avoid them altogether. For example, if you’re eating out and want to order a dessert, choose a dish with fresh berries.

Raspberries, strawberries or blackberries with a touch of fresh cream are all a very low carb dessert option.

7. Choose your drinks with care

You may find you’ll have to change the drinks you order with your meal while on the keto diet.

For example, you may always order soft drinks or alcohol.

Both of these drinks are heavy in carbs, so you need to choose low carb alternatives.

Good alternatives are sugar-free coffee, tea water or and sparkling water.

However, if you really can’t resist that alcoholic drink, then a low carb option is a dry wine with club soda, usually known as a ‘spritzer’.

8. Grilled meats only (keto diet hack)

Do NOT order any food which has been fried. In almost every restaurant you’ll find healthy alternatives like grilled chicken, fish or steak on the menu.

9. Don’t go for fancy food

There’s no doubt about it, wholesome food is so much healthier than fast food.

For example, simple good quality meat or fish accompanied by non-starchy vegetables is ideal if you’re on the keto diet.

Once you start to be more aware of what you’re putting in your mouth you’ll notice how many good healthy choices are out there.

For instance, many restaurants now offer organic and grass-fed meats. If you want a leaner option, then go for the chicken, seafood or fish instead.

10. Experiment with different culture’s food

Here’s the last one of your keto diet hacks for eating out.

You’d be surprised just how many choices you have on the keto diet if you experiment with different culture’s food. For example, Eastern and Asian cultures have a variety of low-carb, healthy meals.

In addition, the Mediterranean diet has been proven to offer great benefits of eating fresh vegetables with good quality meat and fish.
