1. You’re willing to invest time and effort
Don’t be surprised if you don’t see quick results. When I started promoting products I didn’t have any sales at all for a few months.
I’d created my first art and design site in 2002 promoting various niche products. But, as I learned more and invested a lot of time tweaking my offers, finally, people started to buy what I was promoting.
Don’t be disheartened if you don’t get results overnight… keep at it and if you provide good quality advice you will receive commissions.
2. You’re happy to learn new skills
If you’re serious and want to become an affiliate marketer you’ll have to be open-minded and ready to learn the ropes.
Affiliate marketing may seem like unfamiliar territory at first. But, believe me, I know from experience the more you learn the techie skills needed, the more you’ll enjoy it.
3. Self-disciplined
It’s taken me a few years (and I’ve invested a small fortune) to learn what I know about online marketing and affiliate marketing.
I don’t expect you to take as long as me to become an affiliate marketer, as I’m giving you a lot of good information at your fingertips. 🙂
But you DO have to use self-discipline if you want to reach your goals and start to make money with affiliate marketing.
4. Sheer determination
It’s no secret, you’ll find a lot of competition around in the world of affiliate marketing.
But if you learn your craft and are determined to succeed, there’s no reason why you can’t make money too. Keep pushing forward and learn new skills to make your future brighter.
Plus a good attitude
Every successful affiliate marketer has had to battle through and keep trying new techniques whilst being optimistic about their new business.
Remember, you are the one in charge of your future, so keep looking on the bright side. To start to make money with affiliate marketing can really change your life if you just believe you can do it.
Quick Tip!
Here’s a quick tip to find affiliate programs for certain products you want to promote.
For example, if you want to promote ‘Baby Strollers’ then just type into Google:
affiliate programs: baby strollers
The result for this ‘baby stroller’ affiliate program when I searched was 143,000 results from Google!
5. Where to find products to make money with affiliate marketing?
There are hundreds of affiliate sites around on the web, but I’ve listed the main ones here as they seem to have higher quality products.
6. Where can you find training to become an affiliate marketer?
Even though I’ve been an affiliate marketer for a number of years when I saw Michelle Schroeder-Gardner’s course, Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing I sat up and paid attention. You see, Michelle went from $0 to $100,000+ a month (granted over a number of years).
I found her downloadable report 80+ Program Ideas for Different Niches really useful. Especially if you are just starting out as an affiliate marketer.

7. How to sell products as an affiliate marketer
Well, the thing is, to really be successful at affiliate marketing the secret is… NOT to sell. The thing is, everyone wants to buy but nobody wants to be sold to, right?
So here are a few MISTAKES you should avoid if you’re a newbie to affiliate marketing:
8. Don’t try and sell… just provide solutions
You may think just sticking an affiliate banner on your blog will get your visitors to click through and you can sit back and earn a commission.
Well, sorry to tell you, it just doesn’t work that way. Internet users are savvy people. Let’s face it, the Internet has been around for 20+ years (I started creating websites around 2002).
You have to be prepared to help your visitors by providing useful information about your topic. They want to find out how to solve their problems, not just be sold to.
It’s your job to recommend products that can help them do this. To tell you the truth, it can take me a week to find just the right information I need to create ONE SINGLE blog post.
Granted, I’m particular about the products I promote and you can see some of them here and I want my information and advice to MAKE A DIFFERENCE to you, my visitors.
You have to find the right balance and I hope I’ve done that. I provide the RIGHT information for my visitors who are busy women who want to work on their own terms.
9. Share your product experience
I prefer to promote the products or services I’ve used and feel confident they will help my visitors. Sometimes, a friend or colleague will also recommend a product and after checking it out, I may also promote that too.
It goes without saying when you become an affiliate marketer, the more information you can provide about the product you’re promoting the better.

10. Don’t promote more than ONE or TWO of the same type of products
There’s a true saying, “A confused mind never buys“. I see so many bloggers filling their blog content with multiple similar affiliate offers. This approach will just confuse your visitors.
For example, if you decide to promote Product A today, then tomorrow on the same topic you decide to promote Product B.
Then a week later you find a new product and promote Product C, it’s just too much conflicting information.
It’s better to recommend only a couple of products in the same niche. The fact that you keep recommending them or referring to them will put them at ease. That’s the way to create customer loyalty!
11. Take the time and effort to find good products
Promoting products through affiliate marketing requires you to take the time to research each potential affiliate.
You’ll then create the best match for your visitors while offering a quality affiliate product that generates a decent commission for you.
- Don’t be tempted to promote the first affiliate products that grab your attention.
- Do some research and take notice of the reviews for those products.
- Check how much commissions they pay
- Then make your decision to promote the product(s) or not
