16 Tips on How to Save Water & Reduce Your Bills

Today, we’re going to cover how to save water after I came across the United Nations site recently. I really was astonished by the statistics regarding water scarcity.

I’m interested in climate change and ended up watching a video on the Future of Water on YouTube and found it educational as well as scary.

Here are some ways to help to save water

But, I really didn’t know how water scarcity is a major factor for 2 billion people around the world. That’s almost one-third of the population of planet earth.

Also, nearly half the global population is already living in potential water-scarce areas at least one month per year and this is increasing every year.

Conserving water should be in everyone’s interest as you never know what the future can bring with climate change, right? Adjusting the way you use your water during normal life will help tremendously.

How to Save Water & Reduce Your Water Bills

Did you know about 5 liters of water flows out of your tap in just 1 minute? The sad fact is, most of that water will be wasted.

To help stop wasting so much water, try doing some of these things:

1. Wash your fruit and vegetables in a bowl and NOT under a running tap. Use the same water to give your household plants a little drink.

2. Turn the water tap off when washing your hair, brushing your teeth or shaving to save water.

3. When washing the dishes, fill up the sink with water first and DON’T let the water run as you wipe the dishes.

4. Fill your (energy-saving) kettle with only the amount of water you need. By the way, you’re also saving money in your energy costs.

5. Take shorter showers as older shower heads can waste up to 5 gallons of water every minute.

6. Wait until you have a FULL LOAD of dishes before starting the dishwater.

7. Find a car wash that recycles used water.

8. Give your dog a wash outside, that way you are also watering your garden instead of running loads of bath-water.

9. Choose a shower instead of a bath. Did you know it takes around 70 gallons of water to fill up your bathtub? Showers actually save water – around 60 gallons!

10. Almost a quarter of household water (22%) is used when doing your laundry. Make sure you’re using the right settings, preferably an eco setting for your washing load.

11. Garage disposal units in your home require a lot of water to function properly. To save water (and it’s eco-friendly) start a compost pile instead of using your kitchen sink garbage disposal.

12. Invest in a high-pressure shower-head – this will help you save 6 liters of water per minute and reduce your water bills and save water.

13. Install water-flow restrictors in your sinks, to help reduce the volume of the water flow.

14. Harvest all your rainwater by investing in a rain-water barrel and water your plants without even turning on your tap or hose.

15. Replace any worn and damaged tap washers. Dripping taps/faucets can waste up to 4 liters of water a day.

16. Consider buying water-efficient household appliances.

If we all make an effort to save water we will not only be saving the planet but also reducing our water bills and energy bills in the future!
